In 2012, three women activists from feminist, punk, art collective ‘Pussy Riot’ performed a 40 second "punk prayer" inside Russia's main cathedral. It was a protest against links between the Orthodox Church and Putin’s Russia. They were arrested on charges of religious hatred and entered a trial that reverberated around the world and transformed the face of Russian society forever.

As Nadia, Masha, and Katia defend their convictions from within a cage in the courtroom, we learn from their family and friends what transformed these women from political activists into modern day icons. Filmed over the course of six months, with unparalleled access and exclusive footage of the incredible three women, the film reveals the personal motives and courage of the women behind the balaclavas and exposes the state of Russian justice through the court's final verdict.
