Rapping defiantly about her experiences in a sexist and repressive environment, Sonita is an activist for the ages, her spirit, attitude and resolve captured in this powerful documentary...
18 year old Sonita is a refugee from Afghanistan, charting her dreams of becoming a rapper in a scrapbook in a shelter in Tehran. Women aren’t allowed to sing in Iran and her family has a much different path for her, but Sonita is determined to make her dreams a reality.
This documentary showcases how Sonita uses rap to try and free her from the traditions of her culture and family, focusing on the highlights and pitfalls of a young woman who wants to make her own way in the world. Director Rokhsareh Ghaem Maghami becomes personally entwined in Sonita’s story, creating a unique take on the documentary.
