Mustang is released across the UK on Friday 13 May, here are five fairly interesting things to know before seeing the film.
ONE / The five sisters are played by Günes Sensoy, Doga Zeynep Doguslu, Tugba Sunguroglu, Elit Iscan and Ilayda Akdogan - and all but one of the actors (Elit Iscan) were complete novices; meaning they'd had no prior screen-acting experience before filming Mustang. Director Deniz Gamze Ergüven describes how acting classes and exercises helped the girls to empathise with the characters and develop a sisterly bond.
TWO / The film narrative is loosely based on director Deniz Gamze Ergüven's life and experiences of growing up in Turkey, as well as the experiences of her mother. Ergüven talks about the film being an amalgamation of realities, but in the film the sisters fight against the injustices imposed upon them, something she says would never have happened in her childhood.
THREE / The girl gang who play the sisters have gained high profile fans including James Franco, George Clooney and Karl Lagerfeld, presumably because of their moving and adept performances.
FOUR / The film was shot in İnebolu, Northern Turkey, nestled on the Black Sea it has long been considered the gateway to the East, and provides a breathtaking backdrop to the film.
FIVE / The film polarised opinion in Turkey, but has gone on to capture hearts at film festivals around the world. It's interesting to note that the film is a French production and was the French nominee for Best Foreign Language film at the Oscars, though Ergüven doesn't think it was that which influenced opinions in Turkey. In an interview with Vulture, she talks about Turkey being incredibly polarised politically and how the place of women is very central in the current discussions and debates, read the interview here.
